Kerala
Kerala volunteers the traveller many splendours worth not missing in a life time.

The internationally applauded portraits of "Kathakali", tag line "God's own country", "Ayurveda" and "Kerala Backwaters" have now become synonym for Kerala worldwide. Kerala was known to the world; Egyptians, Phoenicians, Chinese, Babylonians and Arabs as far back as the 3rd century BC. The Kerala race is an offshoot of the Dravidian race, the predominant racial strain found among people of Southern India.

Kerala's natural amplitudes, its magnetising fine arts and crafts, dance and music, food, traditional medicine, an unparalleled culture mellowed by centuries-old traditions, coupled with its varied demographics, has made Kerala one of the most popular destinations in India.

Kerala is divisible into three distinct physiographical regions; the robust and cool mountainous terrain of eastern highlands, the central midlands and the coastal plains of the western lowland. Kerala's eastern boundary is demarcated by the tropical evergreen forests of the Western Ghats while the western coastal belt is criss-crossed by a reticulate network of brackish canals, lakes, estuaries, and rivers famously known as the Kerala Backwaters.

Kerala has a wet and maritime tropical climate influenced by the seasonal heavy rains of the southwest and northeast monsoon with average 120 - 140 rainy days an year

Kerala has always been a culturally distinct part of India; its history and traditions exude Persian, European and Indian influences. Kerala's people have a genetic lineage to colonial Portuguese, French, and British along with a subtle Jewish lineage.

Kerala enjoys many international accolades, being unique in cultural, socioeconomic, education, health and political spheres;

  • Kerala is the most educated, the most healthy and gender-equal state in the Indian union. Its basic human development indices are comparable to developed nations.
  • Kerala is distinguished as one among the 25 Biodiversity Hotspots of the world.
  • Kerala has been recognised by UNICEF and WHO as the world's first BabyFriendly state.
  • Kerala is named as one of the "Ten paradises of the world" and "Fifty places of lifetime" by the National Geographic Traveller magazine.
  • Kerala's native language, Malayalam, has the highest number of alphabets among world languages.
  • Kerala's dance form, `Koodiyattom' is a two thousand year old Sanskrit theatre tradition and is recognised by UNESCO as a master piece of "Oral and Intangible heritage of Humanity".
